DANCE Dances from Sweden – “polska”
Led by Klara Andersson and Storösterlens Spelmanslag
For all interested
Polska is the collective name for the most popular dance form in the Swedish traditional scene today. During the workshop, we will learn the polska three-measure rhythm, characteristic of western and central Sweden. We will begin by learning basic steps, then move on to spinning techniques and several other dance motifs. Participants will have the opportunity to try both leading and following.
Klara Andersson – comes from Malmö, Sweden. Dancer and traditional dance teacher. She has extensive experience in both artistic and pedagogical work. The key parts of her work are musicality, rhythm, and the feeling of moving together with another person – sharing a common rhythm, presence, and physical dialogue. She regularly organizes her own courses and projects and conducts long-term work with groups of students.
Storösterlens Spelmanslag – Playing with traditions, archival material and a sense of creative community, Storösterlens Spelmanslag revitalizes the Swedish phenomenon of a “spelmanslag” – a group of fiddlers protecting tradition. With full respect for their foremothers and ancestors, they promote an expansive understanding of living traditions. Their context is hyperlocal, deeply anchored in the Scanian heritage, but also stretching beyond given and imagined borders. Gently lead by Sven Midgren, they explore unexpected soundscapes and grooves, and they love playing for dancers.
