VIOLIN/ OTHER INSTRUMENTS Melodies from Skåne (SE)
Led by Storösterlens Spelmanslag
For intermediate and advanced players – you need to bring your own instrument and be able to repeat melodies by ear
We will learn a few dance melodies from Skåne, Sweden’s southernmost region, and hear about the revival of folk dance and music in the region since the early 20th century. We will play various polskas and perhaps even learn the local “English” form of the contra dance. The workshop will be conducted on violin and is open to any instrument capable of playing in the G, D, and A keys.
Storösterlens Spelmanslag – a group of violinists preserving music tradition and drawing on it, as well as on archival materials and the creative community, to revive the Swedish phenomenon of spelmanslag. With complete respect for their ancestors, the group broadens the understanding of living tradition. Their point of reference is the local, deeply rooted in Skåne’s heritage, but they go beyond both real and imagined boundaries.
