DANCE The ABCs of Obers and Polkas
Led by Piotr Zgorzelski / Akademia Tańca Tradycyjnego, Katarzyna Zedel and Katarzyna Rosik playing
For beginners – bring comfortable shoes, flat or with a low heel
During the workshops, we will master the basic steps of obers and polkas, as well as the principles of traditional dance, so that dancing could be both effortless and enjoyable. We will learn how to dance and spin in pairs, dance in circles, and use various simple ornaments in both odd-meter dances (mazurka rhythms) and even-meter dances (polka rhythms). During the workshops, we will dance to melodies from the Radom and Lublin regions.
Piotr Zgorzelski – a Warsaw native, ethnologist, cultural organizer, actor, and juror at traditional dance competitions. He has been involved in traditional dance for over 30 years. He learned both directly from rural dancers and from archival sources. He has developed his own methodology for teaching traditional dance in non-stage forms, taking into account the contemporary predispositions and skills of a generation deprived of live contact with folk music. His daughters, Fryderyka, Józefina, and Augustyna, will be assisting him in the workshops.
