SONGS from the Zaraś Family
Led by: Maria Siwiec
Music by: Katarzyna Zedel
For: all
Join us for a musical encounter with the traditions of Nieznamierowice, home of one of Radom regions most remarkable fiddlers – Józef Zaraś.
Zaraś and Józef Porczek (master of the three-row Polish accordion) formed a legendary band that played at countless local weddings and celebrations, remembered to this day as one of the finest ensembles in the Radom area.
Maria Siwiec, who lives in nearby Gałki, grew up hearing Zaraś and Porczek’s music. In this workshop, she will teach a selection of przyśpiewki (ditties, short traditional songs) set to several of their dance melodies, all passed down in the authentic versions she remembers from these master musicians.
About Maria Siwiec
One of the foremost traditional singers of the Radom region. Born in Gałki near Przysucha, in the musically rich micro-region of Kajoki, she grew up immersed in village singing traditions, listening to her father, mother, and older sisters. She has sung since childhood – first with her family, later as a wedding bridesmaid (druhna) during the oczepiny ceremony.
Since 1980, she has performed with the ensemble Zakukała kukułeczka, and in 2012 she founded her own group, Gołcunecki.
What sets her apart is her authentic, natural voice and expression that flows straight from the heart.
