Mazurka Reactivation

Mazurka – a diminutive of mazur – is an ancient dance with a centuries-old history. It was popular among countryside gentry and middle class of towns and cities, as well as in village inns. Nowadays, it requires some time and practice to rediscover its strength and beauty, and allow our bodies to get acquainted with the "distinctive Polish rubato". Our project is to bring the brilliance and popularity of mazurkas back to life.

Mazurka Reactivation – activities designed for high school, college and university students, based on music, dance and storytelling. Stories about the worldwide migration of Polish music, Chopin’s music and the life of musicians will be illustrated with movies, photographs and recordings. But there is more – a chance to learn basic steps to vibrating sounds of mazurka can lead young participants to a fascinating discovery that unveils the existence of a space they can fill with their own spirit. Groups with up to 50 people, led by 3 to 4 instructors: musicians, storytellers, dancers. After one session of workshops the young will recognize mazurkas as Polish music (as it is not self-evident), broaden their knowledge about Chopin, will be able to clap and stamp the rhythm of mazurka, and may even feel encouraged to sing and dance.

Our instructors – musicians and dancers – are enthusiasts, dedicated to careful and loving exploration of traditional music from Central Poland. They have years of experience in educational activities with children and the young, workshops, shows, concerts and dancing parties.
