Little Mazurkas
Little Mazurkas are music and rhythm activities for children in preschool and elementary school, based on old games and exercises.
All we do stems from traditional Polish culture – music, songs, instruments, dances, toys, crafts, and wonderfully rich children folklore – nursery rhymes and counting-out rhymes, songs, riddles, fairy tales. We invite children to enter the XIXth century world – the world without electric current and plastic – in the effort to recall its diversity that somehow became lost in the modern preschool and elementary school teaching programmes.
We are using play-based learning activities, which mostly involve singing and live music, performed on authentic "old-world" instruments that are rare today: three-row accordion, fiddle, bass, dulcimer, ocarina, hurdy-gurdy and drum or frame drum (baraban).
Children can learn songs, dances and discover various sounds and shapes of "adult" instruments. They will also have an opportunity to try out smaller instruments – bells, drums, clay birds, shepherd's pipes. And all of this amidst wooden toys, made by village artisans – painted horses on a string, wing-clapping-birds, merry-go-rounds.
